Taiwan: A Digital Democracy in China's Shadow

Overview

Taiwan's youth reject the idea of "One Country, Two Systems," defiantly asserting their identity as a vibrant democracy. As President Xi Jinping intensifies efforts to integrate the island, Taiwan, home to 24 million people, views itself as a sovereign nation with its own constitution and elected officials. Following the suppression of Hong Kong's freedoms, Taiwan stands firm in its commitment to democratic ideals. The struggle for transparency began with the 2014 Sunflower Movement, where citizens rallied against a proposed economic pact with China. Now, activists continue to champion the island’s independence and democratic resilience amidst escalating pressure.
