Stranded (1965)

Overview

Compton's groundbreaking debut, Stranded, released in 1965, showcases her multifaceted talent as writer, director, and star. The film mirrors the innovative spirit of the French New Wave, boldly exploring themes of female autonomy, sexuality, and beatnik culture, while also addressing homosexuality. The story follows Raina, an adventurous American woman portrayed by Compton, as she journeys through Greece with her American boyfriend, Gary Collins, and her gay French best friend, Gian Pietro Calasso. Raina embraces love affairs and chooses independence over marriage, defying the era's conventions surrounding female sexuality, unlike many of her contemporaries on screen.
